The Lady Behind Every Fighter
words and music by Magdalene van den Velde
Dedicated to Lady Caterina di Cellini at GWW, October 2003

On the edge of a battlefield long overgrown,
With dawn barely lighting the sky,
An old woman stands looking out o’er the plains
Remembering battles gone by....

Oh, a young dragoon came out to fight for the king,
Bringing his young lady bride.
He’d practiced so long ‘gainst the pell in the yard,
But was yet in battle untried.

She laced up his armor, invoking God’s grace,
Then added a prayer of her own:
A few simple words to remind him of her
And blessings to bring him safe home.

She’s the lady behind every fighter.
The lady on whom you depend
For beauty, devotion, and grace without peer,
And a love you may ever defend.

She waved as he joined up with brothers in arms;
A last inspiration to show.
Then at a command they marched forth to the field
To join in the melee below.

She saw the red stain of life’s blood on his brow
And ran to the field where he lay,
Then she took up his sword and his shield in her hand
And threw herself into the fray.

She’s the lady behind every fighter.
The lady on whom you depend
For beauty, devotion, and grace without fear,
And a love you may ever defend.

Oh, she carried his body away from the field
And watered the grave with her tears,
Then she shouldered the burden of living alone,
As widows have done through the years.

She’s the lady behind every fighter.
The lady on whom you depend
For fortitude, courage, and grace without fear,
And a love she will ever defend.

On the edge of a battlefield long overgrown,
With dusk barely darkening the sky,
An old woman stands, weeping out o’er the plains,
Remembering battles gone by.
