Dear Journal,
I am a lover of many things and eating is certainly one of the greatest among them. We have arrived at the Villa de Cadiz where the White Star seems to port often. Today we were taken ashore and now are staying in the Villa until it is time to set sail again. I have learned that after being on the sea for a long time that being on shore can make me shore sick! I was glad to learn that I will be staying in the brig on the ship at night.

Before we had reached the Villa in Cadiz we had taken on a new powder monkey by the name of Dylan. This morning while we were eating our ration of potatoes (a luxury over the usual meals they serve me at sea) I discovered two things about Dylan. First is that he seems to be quite taken with the ships bard, and second that the mere passing of her presence is a long enough distraction for me to help myself to his portion of potatoes! Although I was quite surprised to have Lady Caterina offer another plate of potatoes to the both of us. She did glare at me as I leapt up to spoon more potatoes, and I thought I heard her mumble something about “looking thin…”

That night after a day of unloading goods and treasures from the ship I was told that I was to be dining with the household and that I should wear this new coat. I thought this would be good sign of my possible freedom except that I still was meant to wear my shackles during supper. I was angry that they had decided to have this luxurious meal in front of me while I would of course get my usual bread and water. How rude! This was obviously some kind of sick torture, and I’ll be damned if I let them win!

As soon as the bread was passed to me I placed one piece on my plate and nibbled at it gently, smiling at all the others, little did they know that they had a wolf in their presence. As soon as they were all busy with talk and marry-making I made my move by stuffing my face and pockets with as much bread as I could! I then passed it along and none would be the wiser. Then came the course for the vegetables, and I was surprised to have it passed to me! They must have fallen for my trick and believed that I was living on only one piece of bread. So I did the same with the vegetables. There were not as much of them as the bread though, probably due to the physic being served before me. I was quite surprised that they actually passed the tray to me on the next two courses and by now I had caught the attention of Lady Caterina. I would have to play it extra safe to make sure she knows I wasn’t taking any more than the bread. I also managed to get my self a good deal of wine as it went by and no one seemed to notice. By the time the fourth course was on Lady Caterina was hovering over me. I had to be careful. She seemed to be the mastermind behind this cruel torture as she was now setting large plates of food in front of me that must have been extras from the kitchen. I was still crafty enough to hide a few things when she would look away. I thought I heard her say “they must not feed him enough on the ship!” but by that time the three or so glasses of wine I had pilfered had started to effect me.

By the time the last course of a seven-course meal had gone by I had eaten and drunk more than I had ever before. Captain Lot rose from his seat and announced that we should have a dance and everyone began to get up from their seats. I could feel a part of a stuffed brisket (stuffed with bread and vegetables and no cheese! What was going on here!?!) beginning to drip down my leg and I knew that it was going to be tough to make my escape with all this food hidden away, and how was I going to eat it? I was completely stuffed! Caterina exclaimed that no one was going anywhere until Marcos cleaned his plate! During this time she had piled it high with food to the point that I could not see over it. “My lardy!” I said in my now broken English, “I asssssure yer that I need not more food, for I yam but a lowly potter monkey and will be well on my humble portions.” The room starting to spin, probably due to my having drunk enough wine to kill several lesser sailors. The Lady proclaimed that no one was leaving until I had finished, so I decided to get up and explain that I was not feeling well. As I rose from my chair, all the food that I had stuffed in my clothes fell out and onto the floor. The ruse was discovered and I was caught, and full to the brim. I sat back down to await my punishment. I then leaned my head back to say a silent prayer to the saint of eating (whom I cannot recall now) when the room went topsy turvey and then into blackness.

I was awoken the next morning by Mordechai who told me to “Drink this.” “Ughlch, what is this stuff?”

“Something from the physic to help you through the day, now get up it’s time to get to work!”

I am trapped in a world where the people can get through an entire meal without a single scrap of cheese. My best guess is they must have given it up for lent, I just wish I were home!

Yours truly,
Marcos de la Cruz
